Every QR code you print makes one silent promise: whoever scans this will get what they expect. The choice between a dynamic and a static code decides who keeps that promise — you, or the ink.
What a static QR code is
A static code encodes the destination itself. The URL — or the Wi-Fi password, the vCard, the plain text — is written directly into the module grid. Scan it in thirty years and it still resolves, because there is nothing to resolve: no redirect, no vendor, no subscription. That is its superpower and its constraint. The destination is part of the artwork, so changing one means reprinting the other.
What a dynamic QR code is
A dynamic code encodes a short link that redirects to your real destination. The printed grid never changes; the destination behind it is a database row you can edit any afternoon. Because every scan passes through the redirect, it can be counted — which is where scan analytics come from: country, device, time of day, per code, without identifying the person scanning.
The decision rule
Ask two questions about the specific thing you are printing:
- Will the destination outlive the print? A menu, a campaign, a listing, a schedule — these change under the code. Dynamic.
- Must the code outlive every vendor? An equipment label, an emergency sheet, a Wi-Fi card — these must work even if the company that made them is gone. Static.
When both answers are yes, print two codes or accept a trade. But in practice the split is clean: things that inform change, things that identify don't.
The pricing angle nobody mentions
Redirects cost money to serve, so most tools bill by dynamic codes — and so do we. Check before you print
Whichever you choose, test the printed size with the phone you expect your slowest visitor to carry, or paste the artwork into our free scanner to confirm it decodes. A code that scans on a 27-inch monitor and fails on a 40 mm sticker is the most common reprint we see.
